Planning staff capacity around chair availability
The fundamental constraint in a dental practice schedule is chairs, not staff. A 4-chair practice running 2 dentists simultaneously needs at least 4 assistants available - 2 chairside and 2 turning over rooms. Understaffing assistants means dentists wait between patients, destroying productivity. Overstaffing assistants on a light day wastes payroll.
Hygiene scheduling is often treated separately but needs to be integrated into the overall plan. A hygienist occupies a chair for 45-60 minutes per patient. If you have 4 chairs and 2 dentists plus 1 hygienist scheduled simultaneously, you have 1 spare chair for overflow - fine. If you add a second hygienist with 4 chairs already occupied, someone waits.
For broader practice planning, our Fee Schedule Estimator helps ensure revenue per chair is optimised. The Patient Recall Interval Calculator helps manage the appointment demand side by right-sizing how frequently each patient is scheduled.
